Political Awareness

The Harford County Alumnae Chapter’s initiatives to support a Sorority Thrust - Political Awareness & Involvement - seek to examine, explore and foster greater understanding of the social and political influences that affect the lives of people locally, regionally and nationally.  The Chapter’s Social Actions Committee is the vehicle through which public issues are introduced and addressed.  The Social Actions Committee is non-partisan, and committed to creating an increased awareness throughout the greater Harford County community in the areas of local, national and international political issues and increasing political efficacy among the community. We place a special emphasis on the political education and socio-economic awareness of minority, or otherwise underrepresented populations.

Goals of the Sorority’s Political Awareness Thrust, through Social Actions initiatives are to stimulate the public to:

*Increase knowledge of local, national and global issues;
*Consider the plight of the less fortunate and weak;
*Recognize when social and political change is necessary;
*Identify and foster individual leadership, advocacy and empowerment to affect social change and
  political policy; and
*Make positive community contributions

Voter Registration

In March of 1913, nearly six weeks after its founding, several Delta Sigma Theta Founders marched in the historic Suffragist March under the Delta Sigma Theta Banner, the Sorority's first public act. Today, low voter turnout statistics highlight the need to continue to identify ways to include opportunities for all citizens to exercise their voting power.  Click here for information on upcoming voter registration drives.

Delta Days at the Nation’s Capital

In 1989, the National Social Action Commission instituted Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital, an annual legislative conference to increase members’ involvement in the national public policy-making process. The annual conference includes legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy skills development. Featured speakers include key policy makers, members of the United States Congress, Congressional staff members, and national issues experts.
