In March of 1913, nearly six weeks after its founding, several Delta Sigma Theta Founders marched in the historic Suffragist March under the Delta Sigma Theta Banner, the Sorority's first public act. Delta Member Mary Church Terrell, right, in a photograph taken between 1880 and 1900, organized the African American women who lived in and near Washington, DC to join the march, although all African American participants were asked to march at the rear of the procession. Today, Voter Registration drives are a mainstay of Delta Chapters worldwide.
Delta Member and Voting Rights Activist Fannie Lou Hamer, along with Victoria Jackson Gray and Annie Devine, were founding members of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and First African American women to be seated on the floor of the US House of Representatives (1965).
For the past 19 years, the Harford County Alumnae Chapter hosts Voter Registration booths in highly-populated areas throughout the county. The 2008 Voter Registration locations can be found here.
